What is a mouth guard for teeth grinding?

A dental mouth guard (sometimes called a night guard or occlusal splint) is a protective device you can wear over your teeth to cushion them against the pressure of grinding and clenching. It doesn't stop you grinding, but it does absorb the force and create a barrier between your upper and lower teeth, preventing the wear and damage that grinding causes over time.

Custom mouth guards are made from an impression of your teeth, which means they fit precisely and are far more comfortable than generic guards bought over the counter.

Do I need a night guard?

Common signs that you grind your teeth at night include:

  • Waking up with jaw pain or headaches
  • Teeth that look flatter or shorter than they used to
  • Increased sensitivity
  • A partner telling you they can hear you grinding your teeth at night

Left untreated, bruxism can cause significant damage to your teeth over time — a mouth guard is one of the simplest ways to prevent it.

Custom mouth guards from an experienced team in Lichfield

We've been caring for patients in Lichfield since 2008, and identifying and managing the effects of teeth grinding is a routine part of what we do. Many patients come to us having worn through over-the-counter guards, or having lived with jaw pain for years without knowing the cause.

A custom-fitted guard made by a dental professional is different to anything you can buy in a pharmacy — better fitting, more durable, and designed around your specific bite.

Protect your teeth before the damage gets worse

Teeth don't grow back, and the wear caused by grinding is permanent. The sooner a night guard is in place, the less damage there is to manage further down the line. If you suspect you might be grinding, book an appointment and we'll take a look.
